No run-flat tires, no tire pressure monitor, no removable roof and no automatic. The C5 (1997–2004) Z06 goes without all four, and GM put the 2001 car at 117 lb less than a coupe or convertible. What it adds is power. For 2002, GM pulled 405 hp from the Z06’s pushrod V8, as much as the dual-overhead-cam LT5 in the 1990–1995 ZR1 ever made, and quoted 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and a 171 mph top speed, the quickest of any C5. A new 2001 Z06 listed at $47,500. All 21 that sold on Bring a Trailer from mid-April to late September 2026 went for less, at a median of $30,750, and most were low-mile cars. Less weight, more speed, and a price well under the old sticker.

GM sold the Z06 for the 2001–2004 model years. It based the car on the fixed-roof hardtop body, gave it its own LS6 V8 and the M12 six-speed manual, and built 28,388 in four years. The C5 buyer’s guide covers the rest of the range.

  • Horsepower: 385 hp in 2001 and 405 hp for 2002–2004, from the LS6, a 5.7-liter V8 with no supercharger.
  • How many: 28,388: 5,773 in 2001, 8,297 in 2002, 8,635 in 2003 and 5,683 in 2004.
  • Price: $16,500–$38,250 for the 21 that sold on Bring a Trailer from April to September 2026, median $30,750.
  • Years to avoid: none outright. The best buy is a 2004, or a 2002–2003 with proof its valve springs were replaced. The C5 years-to-avoid guide ranks every C5 year.

Section 01

What makes a Z06 different from other C5s

The regular C5 was already quick, and GM called the 1999–2000 hardtop the quickest Corvette yet. Of course GM wanted more. The Z06 replaced that hardtop and kept its fixed roof, then changed the drivetrain, the suspension, the wheels and many details. Per GM, the name honors Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette’s first chief engineer, whose 1963 Z06 package was meant to make the Sting Ray race-ready from the showroom.

  • Engine. Per GM’s 2001 powertrain release (opens in new tab), the LS6 gives the LS1’s 5.7 liters breathing windows between the cylinder bays, high-strength pistons, 10.5:1 compression, a higher-lift cam, stiffer valve springs and bigger injectors, plus a 6,500 rpm redline against the LS1’s 6,000.
  • Gearbox. The M12 six-speed has shorter gears than the coupe’s six-speed (first is 2.97 against 2.66), with a 3.42 rear axle ratio. Short gears, hard pulls.
  • Suspension. The Z06-only FE4 setup has a larger front anti-roll bar, a stiffer rear leaf spring and revised camber. Car and Driver measured a rear spring rate of 714 lb/in, against 634 for the Z51 and 577 for the base car (September 2003).
  • Wheels and tires. Wheels an inch wider front and rear, on Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. Per the 2004 owner’s manual, they aren’t run-flats, there’s no tire pressure monitor, and a tire inflator kit replaces the spare.
  • Weight. A titanium muffler and tailpipes, 17.6 lb lighter than steel, plus thinner glass and a more compact battery. GM put the 2001 Z06 at 117 lb less than a coupe or convertible.
  • Details. Rocker panel scoops that cool the rear brakes, red calipers, red engine covers, its own gauge cluster, extra seat bolstering and optional Torch Red interior accents.

GM’s figures come from its spec sheets and press releases (the 2001 ones from closed-course development testing), and the magazine times from Corvette Action Center’s table of period road tests, all listed in Sources. Every magazine 0–60 time was slower than GM’s, so expect the magazine range.

Section 03

Year-by-year changes that matter

2001. The LS6 arrives with 385 hp and 385 lb-ft, on forged wheels painted light gray. A new Z06 listed at $47,500 including $645 destination. First-year LS6s earned an oil-use reputation, covered in Other known problems.

2002. The LS6 found another 20 hp. Power goes to 405 hp and 400 lb-ft, from a cam that GM’s 2002 engine release (opens in new tab) says opens the valves about 0.03 in (0.7 mm) further, hollow-stem valves (sodium-filled on the exhaust side) that cut about 0.8 lb (368 g) from the valvetrain, and freer-flowing intake and exhaust. The car also got a clutch with 7% more clamp load, revised rear shock valving, cast aluminum front stabilizer links, lighter cast-spun wheels and a standard head-up display (readouts projected on the windshield). Electron Blue joined the colors.

2003. Little changed in the biggest year, with 8,635 built. GM bulletin 021903 (February 2003) records a running change to new fuel tank and fuel line assemblies during the model year.

2004. Every 2004 Z06 got revised shock valving, developed partly at the Nürburgring. The Commemorative Edition (GM option code Z16) added Le Mans Blue paint, a stripe scheme from the C5-R race car, special badges and polished wheels, plus a carbon fiber hood that weighs 20.5 lb, 10.6 lb less than the standard one. GM said it was the first time carbon fiber had been used as original equipment for a painted exterior panel on a North American-built vehicle. GM built 2,025 Commemorative Editions. Journalist Hib Halverson’s 2004 road test lists $51,858 for a base Z06, $4,335 for the Commemorative package and $800 destination.

Section 04

The LS6 valve spring risk on 2002–2003 cars

Now the catch. A valve spring closes the valve after the cam opens it. If one breaks, the valve can hit the piston and wreck the engine.

What owners found. A CorvetteForum member compiled reported failures on stock LS6 valvetrains (opens in new tab) from CorvetteForum and Z06Vette, starting in June 2012 and updating it since (last edited January 2025). His count: 177 failures, with 6 on 2001s, 98 on 2002s, 67 on 2003s and 6 on 2004s. Per car built, late-2002 and early-2003 builds (last five VIN digits above 20000 for 2002, below 09000 for 2003) came out about 17 times as likely to report a failure as a 2001 or 2004, early 2002s about 6 times and late 2003s more than 3 times. He says the data can’t give an absolute failure rate. On Z06Vette he adds that most failed at idle or low-rpm cruising, mostly under about 40,000 miles, and answers a poster who called the rate low by saying his count misses failures. It’s self-reported forum data: a pattern, not a probability.

Four NHTSA complaints, all filed 2010–2011, describe valve spring failures on 2002 and 2003 cars. The one on a 2003 (opens in new tab) reports a spring that broke at 30,000 miles and destroyed the engine. Grassroots Motorsports’ 2020 buyer’s guide reports most failures on 2002 cars, fewer on 2003s and almost none on 2004s.

What GM did. Nothing on NHTSA’s record. By this site’s search, neither NHTSA’s recall data nor its files of GM bulletins from 1995 to 2014 hold a recall, bulletin, campaign or special policy for LS6 valve springs.

Why they broke. Unconfirmed. Owners suspect a bad batch of springs or the 2002 cam’s extra lift. GM’s 2002 engine release lists the higher-lift cam and lighter valves but no spring change, while Halverson says 2002 also got stiffer springs. Owners believe later springs were revised; no GM document found says so.

How to check a car. Ask for the receipt. One owner suggests a phone inspection camera through the oil filler: in the owner study, yellow was the most common color among failed springs where owners gave one, though not the only one. The shop that started a CorvetteForum list of failed cars stocked blue GM Performance Parts springs for the job. No GM document found names the replacement part, so a shop receipt is the best proof.

What it costs. That shop quoted $220 labor plus about $75 for GM springs, 3–4 hours of work, in 2012. Grassroots put a set of springs at under $100 in 2020, and one owner on Z06Vette spent about 6 hours doing it himself in 2010. Get a current quote.

On a 2002 or 2003, treat new springs as cheap insurance: ask for proof, or knock the job off the price. It isn’t a reason to walk away from an otherwise good car.

Section 05

Other known problems, with the records behind them

NHTSA doesn’t separate the Z06, but by this site’s count 22 of its 2001–2004 complaints name the car: 3 for 2001, 6 for 2002, 4 for 2003 and 9 for 2004. No recall covers the Z06 alone.

Column lock recall. The electronic column lock, which locks the steering when the key comes out, is explained in the C5 buyer’s guide. Recall 04V060000 (GM 04006) (opens in new tab) covers certain 1997–2004 Corvettes with a manual transmission, and its 2006 revision, 04006C, switched US manual cars from reprogramming to removing the lock plate. Every Z06 is a manual, so have a dealer check the VIN for completed recall work. Four 2002 complaints naming the Z06 describe a column that wouldn’t unlock or seized.

2004 fuel leaks. Eight 2004 complaints naming the Z06 describe fuel leaking or smelling at the left tank or the crossover between the tanks (opens in new tab), filed 2009–2022. GM’s 2010 service campaign TB-10150 covered leaks at the quick connectors between the tanks, and a 2004 owner on Z06Vette received GM’s letter. Don’t count on it covering a car today.

Oil use on early LS6s. GM bulletins 061000, 010601023 and 010601023A cover higher-than-expected oil consumption on 1997–2002 Corvettes, and a 2001 Z06 owner told NHTSA of 2.5 quarts in 2,400 miles. Halverson reports that GM fixed it with revised piston rings from the start of 2002 production and a revised LS6 valley cover during 2002. An owner in a 2024 thread lists the LS6 PCV system’s internal seal (the crankcase ventilation, built into the valley cover) as a common failure point. GM’s 2011 bulletin PIP-4492P covers oil use or smoke on 2003–2004 cars, pointing at the PCV baffle or the lifters.

Clutch hydraulics. Owners warn of a pedal that sticks to the floor after a high-rpm shift, and of black clutch fluid. GM bulletins 051602 and 051402 (2002) cover a pedal that doesn’t return and discolored fluid on 1997–2002 cars.

Rear axle. Bulletin 3559 covers chatter or shudder in turns on 1999–2004 cars, and 01363 side cover oil leaks. A technician told Halverson that oil blown out of the axle vent is common on hard-driven cars.

Water leaks. Bulletin 060403 covers water in the driver’s footwell on 1997–2003 cars. One owner blamed his on drip-channel seals he thinks were damaged during a windshield replacement.

Shared C5 items. The harmonic balancer (the rubber-bonded pulley on the crankshaft) and seat bolster wear are covered in the C5 buyer’s guide. Grassroots adds control arm bushings that work loose with age, and certain 2004 cars are in recall 04V273000 for lower control arm ball stud nut washers that could fracture. No 2001–2004 cracked-wheel complaint names a Z06, but GM bulletin 0703100003 on irregularities at the spoke base lists 2000–2004 Corvettes without excluding it, so check its wheels too.

What to check before buying a C5 Z06

A good Z06 rewards the homework. Do it before any money changes hands.

  1. That it’s a real Z06. A C5 Z06’s VIN has S (the LS6 engine code) as its 8th character and 1 (the hardtop body) as its 6th, per Corvette Action Center. A 1999–2000 hardtop wearing Z06 badges fails that test.
  2. Valve springs on a 2002 or 2003: the receipt, or a camera look through the oil filler.
  3. Oil use. Ask how much it takes between changes, especially on a 2001.
  4. Clutch and gearbox. Owners suggest a couple of high-rpm shifts to see whether the pedal sticks, clean shifts into first and reverse, and a look at the clutch fluid.
  5. Vibration above 4,000 rpm. One owner’s 27,000-mile car needed a torque tube rebuild (the rigid tube around the driveshaft to the rear-mounted transmission).
  6. Rear axle. Chatter or shudder in turns, and oil on the side covers.
  7. Fuel smell after a fill-up on a 2004.
  8. Recall paperwork for the column lock and, on a 2004, the control arm recall. A dealer can check GM’s records.
  9. Tires, wheels and the kit. Tire age and sizes, the base of each wheel spoke, and the inflator kit, since there’s no spare.
  10. Track use and modifications. Look under the side skirts for cracks from bad jacking and ask who did any modifications. Several recent auction cars were heavily modified.
  11. Water. Damp carpet in the footwells.
  12. A pre-purchase inspection at a dealer or Corvette specialist, on a lift.

Section 07

What a C5 Z06 costs in 2026

Bring a Trailer’s 24 most recent C5 Z06 auctions, from April 16 to September 26, 2026, produced 21 sales from $16,500 to $38,250, with a median of $30,750 by this site’s count. Most had under 50,000 miles and several were heavily modified, so those are low-mile, well-presented prices, not a market average. A sample:

CarMilesSold forSale month
2004 Commemorative Edition6,000$38,250August 2026
200112,000$37,250September 2026
200318,000$34,000September 2026
2004 Commemorative Edition28,000$30,000April 2026
2004 Commemorative Edition37,000$29,000May 2026
200242,000$28,000May 2026

The Commemorative premium shows up on very low-mile cars. With 28,000–37,000 miles, Commemoratives sold in line with regular Z06s; Grassroots put the premium at about $1,500 by blue book in 2020.

This guide found no reliable 2026 figure for a Z06 with 60,000–100,000 miles; expect it to cost less and need more. CorvetteForum’s editors put 2001–2004 six-speed C5s at $25,000–$40,000 for 2026 and ultra-low-mile 2004 Commemoratives at $40,000–$55,000, with no data behind the ranges.

The secret is getting out. Grassroots found good cars at about $19,000–$23,000 in 2020, and values have climbed since. In December 2022, Hagerty put the 2001–2004 Z06 on its 2023 Bull Market list, its yearly pick of collector cars climbing in value, and valued a 2003 at $25,600 in #3 condition and $13,600 in #4 (#1 is best).

Section 08

Ownership costs

For a car this quick, the running costs stay refreshingly down to earth.

Fuel. EPA lists no separate Z06, but rates the manual C5 at 17 mpg city, 26 highway and 20 combined (opens in new tab) under today’s method, the same for 2002 and 2004, on premium. The 2004 owner’s manual recommends 91 octane or higher for best performance and allows 87 with slightly reduced acceleration.

Oil. 6.5 quarts with the filter, per the 2002 and 2004 owner’s manuals. GM’s 2001 spec sheet calls for 5W-30 synthetic, changed every 15,000 miles or once a year under normal use.

Tires, brakes and exhaust. An owner put a new set of tires at $800–$1,200 in 2018. GM’s wheel nut torque is 100 lb-ft (140 N·m), per the 2004 owner’s manual (opens in new tab). The Z06’s high-performance front pads can be noisy at low speed and dusty, and the titanium exhaust can change color with heat. GM calls both normal.

Battery. The Corvette battery guide covers the C5 battery and the acid-leak check under its tray.

Repairs. Other costs are owner-reported and dated, so get fresh quotes:

JobReported costReported
Both fuel tanks and the crossover, 2004About $1,9002010, an NHTSA complaint
Harmonic balancer, shop laborAbout $800 plus the part2017, a CorvetteForum thread

Section 09

The verdict

The pick is a 2004, or a 2002–2003 with a receipt for new valve springs, stock or lightly modified and with service records. The 2002–2004 cars share the 405 hp engine and the stronger clutch, and Grassroots calls them functionally identical. The 2004 adds GM’s revised shocks and, with the 2001, the fewest reported spring failures. Give it the fuel-smell test and it’s the easiest Z06 to recommend.

The budget path is a 2001: 20 hp down, but in the owner study’s low-risk spring group. Opinions split: CorvetteForum’s summary of a Road & Track piece calls the first-year car possibly the best deal, while Grassroots says it doesn’t save enough to make up for the missing power. Buy it only if the price reflects the 385 hp and the oil use checks out.

Skip heavily modified cars unless a shop you can call documented the build. Pay extra for a Commemorative Edition only if the carbon hood and Le Mans Blue matter to you: the big premium follows very low miles, not the badge. Records aren’t optional on a Z06.

What you’re buying is 405 hp and a six-speed from America’s sports car, and a stock car leaves every upgrade to you. Then take it to a track day and find out what the Z06 badge is for. For the next generation’s Z06, see the C6 (2005–2013) buyer’s guide.
